Can I get monthly mowing services?

Yes, it is called Robots as a service (RAAS)

SmartYard offers robotic mowers as a lawn service. We will install, maintain, and manage the mower for you. This can be a great option if you want the benefits of a robotic mower without the upfront cost or maintenance responsibility.

How does a robotic mower operate?

Depending if the mower uses wires or is wireless. Wired robotic mower uses sensors and boundary wires to navigate your yard, trimming grass automatically. It works on a pre-set schedule, cutting your lawn consistently and returning to its charging station when the battery is low or when the job is done. Many models also include GPS tracking to improve efficiency and mapping.

A wireless robotic mower operates using GPS technology, sensors, and boundary-free navigation to autonomously mow your lawn without the need for physical boundary wires.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Mapping the Lawn: The mower uses GPS or other mapping technology to scan and create a virtual map of your lawn. Some models also allow you to manually input the lawn’s dimensions or areas that need special attention.
  2. Navigation and Sensors: The robotic mower relies on GPS and built-in sensors to detect its location, navigate around obstacles, and stay within your lawn’s boundaries. Advanced models use AI and cameras for more precise navigation, avoiding objects like trees, pets, and furniture.
  3. Mowing Pattern: Once the lawn is mapped, the mower follows a random or predefined mowing pattern, ensuring that the entire area is covered. It cuts small amounts of grass with each pass, leaving behind fine clippings that naturally fertilize your lawn (mulching).
  4. Charging Station: The mower autonomously returns to its charging station when the battery is low or when it finishes its mowing schedule. After recharging, it will resume mowing if needed.

Control via App: Most wireless robotic mowers can be controlled and monitored via a smartphone app. You can set schedules, adjust mowing heights, and receive notifications about the mower’s progress, even when you’re not at home.

Can robotic mowers handle tall grass?

Robotic mowers are best suited for maintaining lawns that are already in good condition. If the grass is very tall, it’s recommended to first trim it down to a manageable height with a conventional mower. Once the lawn is at an optimal height, the robotic mower can take over regular maintenance.

How can I tell if a robotic mower is suitable for my lawn?

Factors like the size, layout, and complexity of your lawn help determine whether a robotic mower is right for you. If you have a flat, open lawn, most robotic mowers will work well. If your lawn has steep slopes or lots of obstacles, SmartYard can help you choose a model designed to handle those challenges.

Why should I switch to robotic mowing?

Switching to robotic mowing saves you time, effort, and energy. Robotic mowers provide consistent, eco-friendly lawn maintenance without the need for manual mowing. They are quiet, efficient, and can even operate while you’re not at home.

Is it safe to leave the mower unattended?

Yes, robotic mowers are designed to operate safely without supervision. They have built-in sensors to avoid obstacles and will automatically stop if lifted or tipped over, ensuring safety for pets, children, and property.

Do robotic mowers work in the rain?

Most robotic mowers are weather-resistant and can operate in light rain. However, heavy rain or extremely wet conditions may impact performance, and many models have rain sensors to return to the charging station if the weather gets too rough.

Can I leave the robotic mower outside all year long?

Robotic mowers are designed to withstand the elements, but it’s generally recommended to store them indoors during the off-season, especially in areas with extreme weather. This prolongs the life of the mower and prevents unnecessary wear and tear.

What if my yard is complex or has lots of obstacles?

Robotic mowers can handle complex lawns with obstacles like trees, flower beds, and garden decorations. You can install boundary wires to guide the mower around these areas, and some models have advanced sensors or GPS to help navigate around obstacles.

Which robotic mowing brands does SmartYard offer?

SmartYard offers a variety of leading robotic lawn mower brands that are known for their reliability and performance. This includes popular models from brands like Husqvarna, Kress, and Segway – all chosen for their quality and adaptability to different lawn types.

What kind of maintenance does a robotic mower need?

Robotic mowers require minimal maintenance. This includes cleaning the blades, checking for debris, and occasionally replacing the blades for optimal cutting performance. While most of the time it is automated, it’s also recommended to occasionally inspect the mower for any software updates to keep it running smoothly.

Replace blades every 6-8 weeks during the mowing season. However if the lawn has a lot of debris such as sticks and leaves it may require more frequent replacement.

Is it possible to create many different mowing areas?

Yes, most robotic mowers are capable of managing multiple zones or mowing areas. This can be particularly useful if you have a lawn that’s divided by walkways or other obstacles. You can program the mower to handle different sections of the lawn at with individual schedules, cutting patterns, and cutting heights.

Can robotic mowers handle slopes or hills?

Most robotic mowers can handle gentle slopes, but there are specific models designed for steep terrain. Some can manage inclines of up to 35 degrees, contact SmartYard to help you find the right mower based on your lawn’s topography.

How does the robotic mower stay within my yard's boundaries?

Legacy applications have boundary wire is installed about 1-3″ underground around the perimeter. Most current options available today are wireless and use GPS and RTK precision technology to map out the lawn. This technology is highly accurate at 1-3cm of variance.

How much does it cost to operate a robotic mower?

Robotic mowers are cost-effective, using minimal electricity to operate. On average, the cost to run a robotic mower is just a few dollars per month, making it an affordable option compared to traditional gas-powered mowers.

What’s the maximum area a robotic mower can cover?

The coverage area depends on the model. Robotic mowers can cover anywhere from 1/4 acre up to 18 acres. SmartYard can help match you with a model that suits your lawn size.

How long can the mower mow on a single charge?

Depending on the model, a robotic mower can run between 60 to 120 minutes on a single charge before returning to the charging station.

How much time does it take for a robotic mower to recharge?

Recharging times vary by model, but can vary anywhere from 30 to 180 minutes to fully recharge before heading back out to mow. Larger models have longer battery life to cover bigger areas along with much larger power transformers to expedite the charging times.
